As many know, Google rolled out the new Penguin 2.0 in May of 2014, with less than three percent of the websites in Google’s index taking a hit from it.
Seems pretty low, right?
Wrong. In comparison to all competing algorithm rollouts, it was the third largest to date. More than search queries changed with this little guy. Penguin 2.0 impacted web traffic for thousands of websites. Webmasters reported reductions in traffic of up to 90 percent, which basically crippled businesses and halted online revenues.
But why so harsh?
My highly supported theory? The arsenal of grey-hat SEOs that changed their link building approach after Penguin 1.0.
- Blog comments were replaced by guest blogging
- Profile links were replaced with broken link building
- And many black hat SEOs (some of my friends included) finally went legit
Specifically, Google went to great lengths to remove or disavow EVERY link that could be interpreted by Google as being part of a link scheme.
This is basically payback for those who have worked so hard at coming into SEO compliance, up to this point, has been nil. The reason?
Penguin is an algorithm and not incorporated into standard Google search engine refreshes.
